thealit Frauen.Kultur.Labor. was founded in 1990/1991 out of the former Frauenkulturhaus Bremen (founded in 1982) with the goal of bringing feminist perspectives—both epistemological and practical—into the cultural discourse.
thealit designs programs that create conditions conducive to interactions between artistic and theoretical reflection. This enables a critical exploration and experimental transformation of the respective practices. The question of difference—particularly gender difference—forms the starting point of this work, and articulations of queerness are a central concern. This is because the Frauen.Kultur.Labor. thealit operates on the assumption that gender differences—in complex ways—have a formative influence on the creation of artistic and scholarly works and are thus a powerful political factor.
The main areas of research and experimentation in thealit’s programs are media art and media theory, with a focus on the social restructuring currently taking place in conjunction with digital media applications and their control.
In recent years, the focus has been on artist residencies and brief intermissions in workspaces and exhibition venues. thealit functions as a laboratory, organizes various types of exhibitions and presentations, and creates opportunities for exchange and gathering, with an emphasis on interventionist thinking. The results are published through the own publishing house in both print and digital formats.
